Actor’s Habitat Begins Fall Classes

September 17, 2011

Classes for kids and teens begin Sept. 20

Theater games, slapstick, and timing combine for confidence building and plain old fun as The Actor’s Habitat gears up for fall sessions at the Philipstown Depot Theatre. The Actor’s Habitat provides professional training for young actors in an actual theater setting. Students receive intensive training in voice, movement and acting technique in a fun, energized environment. With the addition of a new teacher, Lisa Sabin, the Drama Gym has been expanded into two separate classes. In Drama Gym 1 (Lisa Sabin) and Drama Gym 2 (Jenn Lee and Lisa Sabin) K-3rd grade students play drama games, learn about performing while building confidence and getting to know the ins and outs of the theatre space.

Teen Action (taught by Jenn Lee and Donald Kimmel) emphasizes the fun and physicality of acting through the art of slapstick, stage combat and music. Beginning with the pratfall, this class (grades 7-12) builds group slapstick routines around musical numbers. Students develop a sense of timing within the structure of a song while honing their physical and vocal skills.

This season The Actor’s Habitat has made shorter sessions for those who might want to “give it a try” or have budget/time constraints. Three sessions are available of four weeks each, with discounts available for multiple sessions, plus a 10 percent discount for multiple family members.

Between them, they have over 40 years of professional work in classical theater, film, Broadway, cabaret, musical theater, stage combat, and commercials. The Actor’s Habitat is co-sponsored by Philipstown Performing Arts and The Philipstown Recreation Department.
